We've all been there 6 - x down on a 7 pointer. Conventional wisdom says 'double first roll', but some others say 'wait, hold on to your advantage'. I was nearly swayed by this but I gave it more thought today and this is what I came up with. You double right away: You win - you win 2, 4 or 6 points You lose - you lose, and unless you are in a money game it makes no diffirence. If you hold on to double later, there are only two occasions that it works to your advantage. 1.You are playing against the back game and it is looking a bit risky. 2.Your opponent has just managed to turn the game in his favour marginaly, but is still in the balance. On both occasions you may be happy for the drop. However, this means that you would have to get two drops to make up the points for one win (not counting gammons etc). In particular, in the back game situation, you would be missing out on a real possibility of an extra three (possilby five) points had you doubled at the start. From now on, if you find me in the unlikely position of trailing 6 - x expect to see the cube flying over first roll. I am, however, still open to persuasion.

I can't think of any reason not to cube on the first roll. You have to win all the games and lose none - so you might as well gain maximum points each time you win. I guarantee your opponent would dearly like to see the cube remain untouched.
