Opinion seems to very on what is the best point to hold in your opponents hone area. I think it is the 5 point while other prefer the 3 point. I'm only talking about holding one point here with two pieces on it. Anyone have a strong opinion one way or the other?

Definitely the 5 point, because by using the 5 point, you are controlling the following 6 points. Also it gives you a definite way out if you decide to leave. However the disadvantage is that you lose control of the previous 4. In an ideal situation you have one chip on 1 point and one chip on 5 and in this case you control the twelve top points of your opponent and hope he doesn't get lucky!

If you have any doubts then read Paul Magriel's 'Backgammon' wherein he talks of the importance of the 5-point . . . The Golden Point.
